GOR ULTIMA CLIENT OPTIONS GUIDE
A complete guide to GorClient display settings, sound, combat, movement, containers, interface controls, skill notifications, profiles, and common troubleshooting.

START HERE
Understanding how GorClient stores and applies your preferences.

Gor Ultima uses GorClient, a customized client built upon the modern TazUO client platform.

It contains many features that were not present in the original Ultima Online client, including enhanced containers, improved health bars, extensive interface scaling, modern gumps, advanced movement options, additional targeting tools, character profiles, interface backups, and numerous quality-of-life settings.

Most options can be changed while logged into the game.

Some settings are global and apply to the entire client, while others are stored within the profile belonging to the account, server, and character currently being played.

Important:

GorClient automatically saves a large amount of configuration data.

When changing important settings, exit the client normally whenever possible so the current profile can complete its save process.

Global Settings
Settings used across the client, including several sound, display, and general client preferences.
Character Profiles
Character-specific options can include interface configuration, macros, gump positions, containers, hotkeys, and other gameplay preferences.
Automatic Backups
GorClient maintains backup copies of several important profile and configuration files to reduce the chance of losing settings after an interrupted save.

VIDEO & DISPLAY
Window size, viewport, frame rate, scaling, lighting, weather, shadows, and world presentation.
Game Window & Frame Rate

Common options include:

  • FPS Cap — limits the maximum number of frames rendered each second.
  • Reduce FPS when inactive — reduces resource usage when GorClient is not the active window.
  • Enable VSync — synchronizes rendering with the monitor refresh cycle and can reduce visible screen tearing.
  • Fullscreen (borderless) — displays GorClient using the full monitor without the normal window border.
  • Borderless window — removes the normal Windows title bar while remaining windowed.
  • Fullsize viewport — allows the world viewport to occupy more of the available client window.
  • Lock viewport — prevents accidental changes to the configured viewport position or size.

The viewport can also be manually configured using its X position, Y position, width, and height.

Zoom & Interface Scaling

GorClient allows the world and several interface systems to be scaled independently.

Available controls can include:

  • world zoom;
  • mouse-wheel zoom;
  • restoring the default zoom after releasing Ctrl;
  • scaling overhead text with world zoom;
  • paperdoll scaling;
  • status-gump scaling;
  • skills-gump scaling;
  • context-menu scaling;
  • trade-window scaling;
  • server-gump scaling;
  • global interface scaling.
If only one part of your interface looks too large or too small, check its individual scale setting before changing the global interface scale.
Lighting & Atmosphere

GorClient includes several options affecting world lighting:

  • alternative lighting;
  • custom light levels;
  • minimum or absolute light behavior;
  • dark nights;
  • colored lights;
  • candle flicker;
  • enhanced weather effects;
  • weather particles;
  • shadows;
  • terrain shadows;
  • tree and rock shadows;
  • animated water.

These settings can substantially change how the world looks.

Performance Tip:

If GorClient runs slowly on older hardware, begin by lowering the FPS cap and disabling expensive optional effects such as advanced shadows, enhanced weather particles, and other post-processing features.

SOUND & MUSIC
Control sound effects, world music, combat music, footsteps, rain, and background audio.
Option What It Controls
Enable Sound Enables normal game sound effects.
Enable Music Enables background music.
Combat Music Allows GorClient to use dedicated combat music when entering War Mode or combat.
Enable Login Page Music Determines whether music is played while using the login screens.
Play Footsteps Enables movement footstep sounds.
Play Rain Sound Enables rain and weather-related audio where supported.
Play Sound When UO Is Not In Focus Allows audio to continue while GorClient is in the background.

Combat Music

For Gor Ultima combat music to play correctly:

  • Enable Music must be enabled;
  • Combat Music must be enabled;
  • music volume must be above zero.

When War Mode begins, GorClient can temporarily replace normal regional music with one of the dedicated combat tracks.

When War Mode ends, normal regional music can resume.

GAMEPLAY
World visibility, terrain presentation, damage warnings, fields, roofs, and general gameplay aids.

Hide Roof

Removes supported roof graphics when appropriate, making indoor areas easier to see.

Vegetation to Stumps

Replaces some obstructive vegetation with smaller stump graphics.

Additional vegetation controls may allow this replacement to occur only within the Circle of Transparency radius.

Hide Vegetation

Provides a stronger option for reducing obstructive vegetation.

Magic Field Type

Magic fields can be shown using different visual presentations such as:

  • Normal;
  • Static;
  • Tile.

Apply Border to Cave Tiles

Can make cave terrain boundaries easier to distinguish.

Health Warning Indicator

GorClient can display a visual warning around the screen when your health becomes low.

Options can include:

  • enabling the health indicator;
  • setting the health percentage threshold;
  • adjusting the size or visibility of the warning.

This can be particularly useful during dangerous combat where watching the status bar constantly is difficult.

MOVEMENT
Traditional movement, WASD controls, doors, pathfinding, auto-follow, and obstacle avoidance.

Always Run

Makes your character run during normal movement whenever the server permits it.

An additional option can prevent automatic running while hidden.

Use WASD Movement Instead of Arrow Keys

Enables movement using:

W = forward
A = left
S = backward
D = right

This is useful for players more comfortable with modern keyboard movement.

Pathfinding

GorClient can attempt to calculate a route toward a selected destination.

Related options can include:

  • Enable Pathfinding;
  • use Shift for pathfinding;
  • single-click pathfinding;
  • obstacle avoidance.

Pathfinding is helpful but should not be expected to perfectly navigate every unusual custom map, doorway, staircase, ship, or tightly packed decorative area.

Doors

Automatic door controls may include:

  • automatically open doors;
  • automatically open doors while pathfinding;
  • allow door handling while hidden;
  • automatically close doors;
  • avoid walking directly into a closed door.
Auto Follow

GorClient can automatically follow another mobile.

Options may include:

  • enable Auto Follow;
  • follow distance;
  • disable Alt-click Auto Follow.

COMBAT
War Mode, targeting aids, attack confirmations, combat music, buffs, and health information.

Hold Tab for Combat

Changes how the Tab key behaves when entering or leaving War Mode.

Query Before Attack

Can ask for confirmation before potentially unwanted attacks.

Query Before Beneficial Acts on Murderers, Criminals, or Gray Targets

Can provide additional protection from accidentally performing actions that may affect your criminal or notoriety status.

Show Target Indicator

Displays a visual marker identifying the current target.

Show Buff Duration

Displays remaining buff time where supported.

War Mode Music

Entering War Mode can trigger a dedicated Gor Ultima combat soundtrack.

If normal music stops but combat music does not begin, see the Troubleshooting section below.

CONTAINERS
Traditional containers, grid containers, corpse layouts, scaling, highlighting, and inventory organization.

GorClient supports multiple approaches to inventory display.

Players who prefer the traditional Ultima Online appearance can continue using familiar container gumps.

Players who manage larger inventories may prefer the enhanced grid-container system.

Traditional Containers

Options may include:

  • large container gumps;
  • container scale;
  • item scaling;
  • remember container positions;
  • relative drag-and-drop;
  • double-click to loot;
  • recolor containers using their hue;
  • highlight the corresponding world container when its gump is hovered.
Grid Containers

Options may include:

  • Grid View;
  • List View;
  • Search;
  • container preview;
  • rows and columns;
  • opacity;
  • border visibility;
  • border colors;
  • low-contrast item highlighting;
  • item scaling;
  • anchorable container windows.

Container Style

Controls the normal preferred container presentation.

Corpse Container Style

Separately controls corpse windows.

This allows you, for example, to use normal containers for your own inventory while opening corpses in a grid layout.

Tip:

If containers suddenly begin opening differently than expected, check both Container Style and Corpse Container Style. They are separate settings.

GUMPS & INTERFACE
Control status windows, skills, buff bars, shops, opacity, anchoring, and other interface behavior.

A gump is an Ultima Online interface window.

Examples include:

  • your paperdoll;
  • status window;
  • skills window;
  • spellbooks;
  • containers;
  • vendor windows;
  • trade windows;
  • server-created menus.

GorClient provides additional controls for how many of these windows behave.

Option Purpose
Require Alt to Move Gumps Helps prevent interface windows from being moved accidentally.
Require Alt to Close Anchored Gumps Protects anchored interface groups from accidental closing.
Close Entire Anchored Group Allows a connected group of interface windows to close together.
Use Original Skills Gump Uses the older Ultima Online-style skill window.
Use Old Status Gump Uses the older character-status appearance.
Improved Buff Gump Enables the enhanced buff display.
Advanced Shop Gump Uses an enhanced vendor interface where supported.
Modern Color Picker Uses the newer color-selection interface.
Alt + Scroll Gump Opacity Allows supported window transparency to be adjusted directly.

MOBILES & HEALTH BARS
Names, notoriety, health, auras, poisoned targets, draggable bars, and character visibility.

In Ultima Online terminology, a mobile is a player, NPC, creature, monster, or other living entity.

GorClient provides several ways to make important mobiles easier to identify.

Options can include:

  • show incoming mobile names;
  • show corpse names;
  • highlight poisoned mobiles;
  • highlight paralyzed mobiles;
  • highlight invulnerable mobiles;
  • display an aura beneath mobiles;
  • use a custom aura for party members;
  • hue mobiles by notoriety;
  • configure hidden-player opacity or hue;
  • always display names or titles.
Health Information

GorClient can display mobile health using:

  • percentage;
  • bar;
  • both percentage and bar.

Health information can also be configured to display:

  • always;
  • only when below 100%;
  • using Smart behavior.
Draggable Health Bars

Additional options may include:

  • modern health-bar gumps;
  • black backgrounds;
  • automatic bars for the last attacked target;
  • automatically closing old bars;
  • anchoring health bars together;
  • saving health-bar positions;
  • drag-selecting multiple bars.

CHAT, SPEECH & JOURNAL
Speech colors, overhead messages, party chat, journals, timestamps, filtering, and logs.

Speech colors can be configured independently for several types of communication, including:

  • normal speech;
  • whisper;
  • yell;
  • emotes;
  • party;
  • guild;
  • alliance;
  • system or character information.

GorClient can also control which kinds of messages are shown overhead.

Overhead Text

Options may include:

  • party chat above player heads;
  • preventing overhead text from intercepting mouse clicks;
  • hiding regular overhead messages;
  • hiding system messages;
  • hiding emotes;
  • hiding spell text;
  • hiding guild text;
  • hiding whisper text;
  • hiding yell text.
Journal

Journal options may include:

  • maximum number of entries;
  • opacity;
  • background color;
  • journal style;
  • hide borders;
  • transparency while inactive;
  • hide timestamps;
  • hide system prefixes;
  • anchorable journal windows;
  • save journal to file.

TOOLTIPS
Customize object-property information shown when hovering over items and mobiles.

Enable Tooltips

Controls whether tooltips are displayed.

Tooltip Delay

Controls how long the pointer must remain over an object before the tooltip appears.

Additional tooltip controls can include:

  • background;
  • background hue;
  • opacity;
  • font;
  • text color;
  • alignment;
  • centered mobile tooltips;
  • forced tooltips;
  • item-name header formatting.

SKILL GAIN DISPLAY
Disable text messages, the visual progress display, or both.
Looking for the skill-gain popup setting?

The relevant controls are located in the Miscellaneous options.

There are two different settings.

Show Skills Changed Messages

Controls the text message generated when a skill increases or decreases.

Disable this if you do not want the textual notification.

Display Progress Bar on Skill Changes

Controls the visual skill-gain progress display that appears when a skill changes.

Disable this if you do not want the visual progress popup.

To remove all skill-gain notifications:

  1. Disable Show Skills Changed Messages.
  2. Disable Display Progress Bar on Skill Changes.

You can disable either feature independently if you want to keep only the text or only the progress display.

MISCELLANEOUS
Additional quality-of-life, interaction, targeting, networking, and experimental controls.

Common options can include:

  • Hide the "screenshot stored in" message;
  • Enable object fading;
  • Enable text fading;
  • Show target-range indicator;
  • Show stat-change messages;
  • Show skill-change messages;
  • Display skill-change progress bars;
  • Require Shift to open context menus;
  • Require Shift to split stacks;
  • Highlight the object beneath the cursor;
  • Change appearance of out-of-range objects;
  • Smooth boat movement;
  • Enable asynchronous map loading;
  • Enable automatic resynchronization/hang detection;
  • Enable supported house transparency.
Experimental Input Controls

Advanced users may find controls that disable or alter traditional Ultima Online behavior, such as:

  • default UO hotkeys;
  • arrow-key movement;
  • Tab toggling War Mode;
  • Ctrl+Q / Ctrl+W message history;
  • combined mouse-button automatic movement.

Change these settings carefully.

If you disable several of them at the same time, it may become difficult to determine which setting caused an unexpected input change.

PROFILES & SAVED SETTINGS
Understanding what is saved globally and what belongs to an individual character.

GorClient maintains separate configuration information for different layers of the client.

Examples of profile-related information can include:

  • gameplay preferences;
  • gump positions;
  • macros;
  • hotkeys;
  • skill groups;
  • grid-container configuration;
  • AutoLoot settings;
  • organizer settings;
  • spell bars;
  • journal filters;
  • health-bar preferences;
  • interface decoration settings.

Different characters can therefore use different layouts without forcing every character on the client to use the same configuration.

Profile Copying

GorClient includes options that can intentionally copy settings from the current profile to other profiles.

These can include:

  • Override other profiles with this one;
  • Override profiles on this server with this one;
  • Override other profiles' macros with this one;
  • Set this profile as the default for new characters;
  • Set this profile's macros as the default for new characters.

Use Profile Override Carefully

These options are intended to replace configuration in other profiles.

Do not use them simply because one setting appears not to have saved.

Normal Exit

After making a large number of configuration changes, exiting GorClient normally is preferable to terminating the program through Task Manager or forcibly closing the process.

A normal shutdown gives the client an opportunity to write the latest profile state and create its expected backup files.

RECOMMENDED STARTING SETTINGS
A comfortable starting point for players new to GorClient.
Setting Suggested Reason
Enable Music On Allows regional and combat music.
Combat Music On Enables Gor Ultima combat tracks.
Play Sound On Preserves normal world and combat audio.
VSync Personal preference Useful when visible tearing occurs.
Hide Roof On Makes indoor areas easier to navigate.
Display Skill Progress Bar Personal preference Disable if frequent skill popups are distracting.
Show Skill Change Messages Personal preference Can be disabled separately from the visual bar.
Automatic Door Opening On Convenient during normal travel.
WASD Movement Personal preference Useful for players accustomed to modern games.
Auto Avoid Obstacles Try On Helpful in ordinary terrain, though custom areas may still require manual movement.

There is no single perfect GorClient configuration.

The best settings depend on your monitor, computer, play style, preferred movement method, interface size, and whether you prefer a traditional Ultima Online appearance or GorClient's modern enhancements.

TROUBLESHOOTING
Common configuration problems and what to check first.
Problem What to Check
Skill progress bar keeps appearing Open Miscellaneous and disable Display Progress Bar on Skill Changes.
Skill-change text keeps appearing Disable Show Skills Changed Messages.
I want no skill-gain notification at all Disable both skill-change settings.
Normal music works but combat music does not Confirm Enable Music and Combat Music are enabled and music volume is above zero. Fully restart GorClient after changing music configuration files.
Music stops when entering War Mode Verify combat music is enabled. If normal music goes quiet, GorClient has likely entered the combat-music state even if the requested combat track cannot be played.
A setting returns after restarting Confirm the correct character/profile is active, change the setting again, and exit GorClient normally so the profile can save.
One character has different settings This can be intentional. Character profiles are maintained separately.
Interface is too large Check global scale and the individual scale for the affected gump.
Interface is too small Increase the relevant interface or gump scale rather than increasing every scale unnecessarily.
Containers open in the wrong layout Check both Container Style and Corpse Container Style.
WASD does not move my character Confirm Use WASD Movement Instead of Arrow Keys is enabled and verify another hotkey is not intercepting those keys.
Tab no longer changes War Mode Check the combat options and experimental Miscellaneous controls affecting Tab/War Mode behavior.
Doors do not automatically open Verify automatic door opening is enabled and confirm the door is within usable range.
Pathfinding stops unexpectedly Custom map geometry, trees, decorations, ships, stairs, dynamic objects, and blocked tiles can interrupt automatic pathfinding.
My gumps moved Check whether gumps were manually dragged, whether anchoring is enabled, and whether the character is using the expected profile.
My profile appears different on another character Profile settings can be character-specific. Use profile-copy options only if you intentionally want the configurations to match.

If an option behaves unexpectedly, change only one setting at a time while testing.

This makes it much easier to identify which option is actually responsible for the behavior.

BUILD THE CLIENT EXPERIENCE THAT WORKS FOR YOU
GorClient can be kept close to the traditional Ultima Online experience or customized with its modern interface, movement, container, targeting, and display systems. Start with the settings you understand, experiment gradually, and allow each character profile to develop into the layout that works best for you.
