SKILL PROFICIENCY
A skill is more than a number. As your expertise grows, the skill develops an identity, practical benefits, and a place within larger paths of mastery.

What Is Skill Proficiency?

Skill Proficiency is a long-term progression layer built upon the familiar skills of Ultima Online.

As a skill increases, it does more than move toward a higher number. It develops through named stages that reflect the character's growing expertise.

A novice may simply know Archery.

With greater experience, that same skill may progress through True Aim, Quick Nock, and Eagle Eye before reaching the mastery title of Marksman.

Every supported skill follows its own path.

Combat skills, magic, crafting, wilderness knowledge, animal skills, rogue abilities, bardic talents, and support skills can each develop their own names and proficiency benefits.

The name of the skill changes because your relationship with that skill has changed.

A master is no longer merely someone who possesses a high number. The character has developed a recognized level of expertise and can gain benefits appropriate to the nature of that skill.

TWO PARTS OF SKILL PROFICIENCY
The visible title and the underlying proficiency level develop together, but they are not the same thing.

The displayed identity of the skill changes at major milestones.

Every supported skill has its own sequence of names at:

40.0
60.0
80.0
100.0 and above

These titles describe the character's growing expertise in that particular skill.

The practical benefits of the skill can scale more gradually.

Proficiency benefits increase in ten-point skill steps, building toward a maximum of Proficiency Level 10.

This allows a skill to continue becoming more effective between the larger title milestones.

THE EVOLUTION STAGES
Every skill has its own names, but the major thresholds follow the same progression.
0.0 to 39.9
Base Skill
The normal skill name is displayed.
40.0
First Evolution
The first specialized title is earned.
60.0
Second Evolution
The skill develops a stronger identity.
80.0
Expert Evolution
The character reaches an advanced stage of expertise.
100.0+
Mastery Title
The final named stage of the skill is earned.

PROFICIENCY LEVELS
The skill can become more effective even between its major evolution titles.

Proficiency benefits scale from the character's base skill value in ten-point steps.

Every full ten points of skill can advance the underlying proficiency level, up to a maximum of Proficiency Level 10.

10.0 skill begins the first proficiency level.
20.0 skill reaches the second proficiency level.
30.0 skill reaches the third proficiency level.
40.0 skill reaches the fourth proficiency level and the first evolved title.
50.0 skill continues increasing proficiency without changing the title.
60.0 skill reaches the second evolved title.
80.0 skill reaches the expert title.
100.0 skill reaches Proficiency Level 10 and the mastery title.

This creates two forms of progress at the same time.

The evolution title marks major accomplishments.

The proficiency level allows practical benefits to continue developing between those larger milestones.

BASE SKILL VALUE MATTERS
Mastery is earned through training, not temporarily borrowed from equipment.
SKILL PROFICIENCY USES YOUR BASE SKILL VALUE

Temporary equipment bonuses do not grant evolution titles or increase the proficiency level you have permanently earned.

For example, a character with:

78.0 base Archery
and
+10 Archery from equipment

still has 78.0 base Archery for Skill Proficiency.

The temporary equipment bonus may help the skill perform according to the normal rules of the item or system providing it, but the character has not yet permanently earned the 80.0 evolution title.

The next evolution is earned when the character's actual base skill reaches the required threshold.

EVERY SKILL HAS ITS OWN PATH
The system does not simply rename every skill Apprentice, Expert, and Master.

Each skill has evolution names and proficiency benefits designed around what that skill actually represents.

A weapon skill develops differently from a crafting skill.

A bard develops differently from a miner.

A tamer develops differently from a thief.

The names are intended to tell the story of increasing expertise within that particular discipline.

PROFICIENCY BENEFITS FIT THE SKILL
The purpose is to deepen a skill, not turn every skill into the same collection of bonuses.
May improve weapon handling, precision, defensive rhythm, stamina use, pressure, durability, or other benefits appropriate to the fighting discipline.
May improve mana efficiency, reagent use, casting stability, magical resistance, spiritual awareness, or other arcane benefits.
May improve material conservation, item durability, crafting efficiency, quality, or other benefits related to the craft.
May improve harvesting, tracking, survival, rare-resource discovery, travel, or the handling of wilderness dangers.
May strengthen concealment, theft, locks, poison work, hidden movement, investigation, or other abilities built around cunning and opportunity.
May improve healing, musical reliability, control, support effects, animal relationships, and other abilities that strengthen the character or those around them.

SKILL PROFICIENCY DOES NOT REPLACE THE ORIGINAL SKILL
The original skill remains the foundation.

Skill Proficiency is an additional progression layer.

It does not remove the normal purpose of the skill.

A swordsman still relies upon the normal combat rules of weapon skill.

A mage still relies upon Magery.

A blacksmith still relies upon Blacksmithy.

An animal tamer still relies upon Animal Taming.

The proficiency system adds small, readable benefits that reflect deeper experience with the skill.

The skill remains important because of what the skill already does. Proficiency rewards the character for becoming exceptionally experienced with it.

SKILL EVOLUTION DISCIPLINES
Individual skills can also contribute to broader fields of expertise.

Many skills are connected to one or more broader Skill Evolution Disciplines.

A discipline represents a larger family of related knowledge.

For example:

• Warrior Discipline can bring together martial knowledge, combat pressure, and survival.

• Ranger Discipline can connect bowcraft, tracking, campcraft, and wilderness fighting.

• Beast Discipline can connect Animal Lore, Animal Taming, Veterinary work, and command presence.

• Shadow Discipline can connect stealth, hidden movement, theft, locks, traps, and poison work.

• Bardic Discipline can connect music, Discordance, Provocation, and calming control.

• Provisioner Discipline can connect food, Alchemy, taste, trade sense, and practical survival goods.

This creates a progression structure where an individual skill has its own identity while also contributing to a broader style of expertise.

CONNECTED TO THE REST OF GOR ULTIMA
A highly developed skill can matter beyond its original use.

Evolved Skills and Skill Proficiency are designed to connect with the wider progression systems of Gor Ultima.

Depending upon the skill, its proficiency can support or interact with:

• Custom Class System
• Class Bonus Systems
• Summoner Progression
• Esper Companions
• Wands and Wandcraft
• Magical Meals
• crafting and resource systems
• gathering and wilderness systems
• combat and equipment systems
• utility and quality-of-life systems

The intention is for expertise in a skill to remain useful throughout the larger world rather than becoming irrelevant once the number reaches 100.

AN EXAMPLE OF SKILL DEVELOPMENT
One skill can change identity several times during a character's career.

A character begins training Animal Taming.

At first, the skill is simply known as Animal Taming.

At 40.0, the character earns the first evolved title:

Gentle Touch

At 60.0:

Wild Bond

At 80.0:

Pack Leader

At 100.0:

Beast Master

During that journey, the character's underlying proficiency also continues developing in ten-point steps.

The result is not merely a renamed skill.

The character gradually develops proficiency benefits connected to taming aggression, bonding, and the strength of controlled companions while also advancing toward broader beast-related disciplines.

A newly trained tamer and a Beast Master may both possess the same skill on the character sheet, but the progression system recognizes how far each has traveled along that path.

WHY SKILL PROFICIENCY EXISTS
A skill should feel like something a character learns, practices, and eventually masters.
Named stages make progression feel more meaningful than watching a number slowly increase.
Small proficiency benefits allow expertise to provide useful growth without replacing the normal importance of the skill.
Related skills can contribute toward broader disciplines and connect individual expertise to the larger progression of the shard.
